Be a part of our joint grassroots effort to keep swimming pools safe!

We urgently need your assistance with an important pool safety matter! In March, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reversed their guidance of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGB), removing important entrapment prevention requirements. The reversal brings into question the influence representatives from the pool industry have in CPSC's decision-making process. This reversal will leave swimmers, especially children at risk. We are asking that you please join Pool Safety Council, in collaboration with Safe Kids USA, by printing, signing, and mailing a copy of the letter available below as soon as possible, as well as signing our online petition, urging the CPSC to keep "layers of entrapment protection" in their guidance. This decision is a strange and blatant contradiction to the intent of the VGB Act.

During a recent vote, the CPSC reversed Congress's intent of VGB by removing the requirement for "layers of entrapment protection", which requires that all public pools have back-up safety devices installed that would prevent entrapments, and definitely reduce, if not eliminate the possibility of evisceration. It is ludicrous to rely solely on drain covers, especially since it's not a matter of if a drain cover will become missing or break, but a matter of when. History shows that we cannot rely solely on drain covers to prevent the horrific deaths and serious injuries that are caused by pool and spa entrapments.

Because of the outrage in the swimming pool and spa safety community, an opportunity has opened for one of the Commissioner's on the CPSC to change his vote, and keep the "layers of entrapment protection" requirement in the VGB Act. We ask that you please join our grassroots effort, and mail a copy of the attached letter to the Honorable Robert Adler of the CPSC, urging him to change his vote, and keep the requirement for "layers of entrapment protection" in the guidance.

We ask that you please forward this letter and link to the petition to everyone that you know, urging them to join this effort. Together, we can work towards safer swimming pools and spas for all bathers, especially young children.
